A farmer checks the damage to his crop, which is being devastated by maize lethal necrosis (MLN). MLN is caused by the synergistic interaction of two viruses, maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) and a member of the potyviridae. MCMV has spread throughout East Africa in the last five years and threatens the region’s ability to produce maize, a staple food. My work focuses on understanding and combating this virus.
