Cambridge Biosciences DTP PhD Programme

Congratulations to Hamish Symington and Laura Taylor (BBSRC DTP Cohort 2017) for the Highly Commended Award in the category of Peer Support.

In 2019, the BBSRC DTP programme held for the first time the BBSRC DTP Symposium that included talks from students and  from keynote speakers, a student poster session and interactive sessions with representatives from companies and external organisations. The whole event was organised by a student committee, under Hamish's leadership. Laura was successful in securing sponsorship for prizes for best poster and best presentation, and she led the initiative to link the symposium with PIPS opportunities by making contact with external organisations who can potentially provide internship opportunities, with the result that representatives of 26 organisations were available to speak with students.

Feedback from the industry reps and students was tremendously positive. Overall, the Symposium was a great success and now it is embedded in the programme’s activities a as an annual event. Huge credit is due to the entire student organising committee, but particularly to Hamish and Laura who played critical roles in the success of this initiative. Well done Laura and Hamish!
