We are very pleased to welcome the new 2022 SBS DTP students to Cambridge.
On their first week, the 31 students took part in an induction meeting. This was a great opportunity to meet in-person with students after almost 2 years of online induction events. Students had the chance to learn more about starting their research degree, the support and training offered, and most importantly, they were able to meet other research students in their cohort. The event was attended by Prof Chris Smith (DTP Director), Dr David Sargan (Chair of the Training Committee), Dr Samantha Byers (Researcher Developer for the Postgraduate School of Life Sciences) and Dr Matt Castle (Head of Bioinformatics Training Facility). Two students from the 2021 SBS DTP cohort, David O'Loughlin and Julia Acker, also joined the event and gave a talk about their PhD experience so far and student life in Cambridge.
The group was also invited to visit the Botanic Garden, including a talk from Dr Edwige Moyroud, followed by a tour around the gardens. The cohort was divided in small groups and guided by students from previous cohorts. The aim was to get the members of each group to talk to each other about their own backgrounds and interests and to start them on the road to new friendships!
A special thanks goes to our fantastic students, who helped us organise this event: Samuel Dada (2019 cohort), Julia Acker (cohort 2021), Chris Micklem (cohort 2018), Myrsini Tzioni (cohort 2019) and Ailie McWhinnie (cohort 2021).
