BBSRC DTP student wins Monogram early career excellence award

Yeorgia Argirou has won the Monogram early career excellence award - awarded annually to young scientists researching small grain cereals and grasses – for her work on the use of novel genetic diversity in hybrid wheat.

The Young Entrepreneur Scheme is a global competition developed to raise awareness of how ideas from science and engineering are commercialised. University teams develop a business plan for a start-up company based on a hypothetical but plausible idea.

Harriet’s research is focused on figuring out the best ways to farm for people, the planet and pigs! There is growing evidence that land sparing (increasing yields on existing farm land and sparing intact habitat for nature) would have the best biodiversity outcomes.

Welcome to our new BBSRC DTP cohort 2023!

After a three-year funding gap, we are thrilled to announce the arrival of a fresh cohort of DTP students, generously funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Building on last year's successful securing of funding for DTP3, this October marks the commencement of the first cohort, with another set to follow next year.

Max (SBS DTP, cohort 2020), PhD student in Prof. Florian Hollfelder’s lab, was one of the 17 students presenting at the Department of Biochemistry PhD Symposium. His talk, with the title ‘A Microfluidics-enabled Workflow for Rapid Large-scale Fitness Data Generation Informs Biocatalyst Engineering’, won First prize for "best oral presentation".
